    Job Summary:

    The Manager, Business Unit Engineering, Emerging Products is responsible for tactical management and execution of product design and development, sustaining engineering, productivity, and field quality for the Residential Business Unit’s emerging product line.  This leader should have experience in management and oversight of cross functional engineering disciplines with a strong technology emphasis on cloud connected platforms, IOT devices and platforms, and video applications.  This leader provides input to the BU engineering director in support of strategic and tactical plans, financial plans, and product and services roadmaps as they relate to current and future product development.  This role collaborates with the global innovation group and external parties to identify and evaluate technologies and capabilities necessary to support the BU strategy and product roadmaps, then works with the BU engineering director to develop and maintain BU technology roadmaps.  The Manager, Business Unit Engineering, Emerging Products provides technical oversight and direction for the BU engineering team and is responsible for tactical engineering execution of business unit initiatives, product and services roadmaps, technology roadmaps, quality metrics, and customer satisfaction goals.  This role is also responsible for providing input on BU engineering expense and capital budget planning and tracking, as well as 18-month resource forecasts and time reporting for the BU engineering team.   The Manager, Business Unit Engineering, Emerging Products creates and manages execution of training plans for direct and matrix reports that improve the core competencies and skills of the BU engineering team.  This role reviews and approves engineering deliverables and engineering change notices (ECNs) for all direct reports and ensures design quality through participation in design reviews for business unit projects.

  • Job Responsibilities:

    Provide input to the business unit leadership team for strategic plans, financial plans, and product and services roadmaps that address market opportunities and support the corporate vision, mission and strategy; ensure engineering alignment

    • Collaborate with the global innovation group and external parties to identify and evaluate technologies and capabilities necessary to support the business unit strategy and product roadmaps; create and maintain the business unit technology roadmaps
    • Responsible for tactical engineering execution of business unit initiatives, product and services roadmaps, technology roadmaps, quality metrics and customer satisfaction goals; provides technical oversight and direction for the engineering team
    • Responsible for engineering inputs to project plans, including estimates of resources, schedule, product cost and investment
    • Responsible for assessing the functional design approach and technical feasibility for the team’s product designs
    • Ensure engineering and business process compliance by all direct reports; responsible for achievement of engineering and business unit key performance indicators (KPIs)
    • Responsible for expense and capital budget planning and tracking for the engineering team supporting the business unit
    • Responsible for 18 month resource forecast for the engineering team supporting the business unit; accountable for time reporting by direct reports
    • Create and manage execution of training plans for direct reports that improve the core competencies and skills of the business unit engineering team
    • Review and approve engineering deliverables, engineering change notices (ECNs), and change approval board (CAB) tickets for all direct reports; ensure design quality through participation in design reviews for business unit projects
    • Protect Chamberlain’s reputation by keeping information confidential
    • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
    • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed
  • Job Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, physics, math or other technical field, and a minimum of twelve (10) years of job-related experience; An additional 4 years of job related experience can substitute for the bachelor’s degree; An advanced degree in directly applicable area of study may substitute for up to two (2) years of job related experience; Six Sigma Green Belt certification strongly preferred; or commitment to obtain certification within two (2) years of date of hire or promotion
    • Working knowledge of and experience with product design and development including mechanical and electrical systems, embedded software, connectivity (radio, cellular, cloud, etc.) and related services
    • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time domestically and internationally

    Preferred Job Requirements:

    • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, physics, math or other technical field.  MBA or equivalent; Six Sigma Black Belt certification; Scrum master certification
    • Experience in project and/or program management; Experience outsourcing product designs, particularly with offshore suppliers and partners
    • Ability to lead a Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Value Analysis Value Engineering (VA/VE) event; In depth knowledge of stage-gate (waterfall) and agile development processes
    • Proficiency in second language (i.e. English, Spanish, Mandarin)
